Compassion, Reverence, Courage

Once upon a time there was an old woman who used to meditate on the bank of the Ganges. One morning, finishing her meditation, she saw a scorpion floating helplessly in the strong current. As the scorpion was pulled closer, it got caught in the roots that branched out far into the river. The scorpion struggled frantically to free itself but got more and more entangled.

She immediately reached out to the drowning scorpion, which, as soon as she touched it, stung her. The old woman withdrew her hand but, having regained her balance, once again tried to save the creature. Every time she tried, however, the scorpion's tail stung her so badly that her hands were becoming bloody and her face distorted with pain.

A passerby who saw the old woman struggling with the scorpion shouted, "What's wrong with you, fool! Do you want to kill yourself to save that ugly thing?"

Looking into the stranger's eyes, she answered, "Because it is the nature of the scorpion to sting, why should I deny my own nature to save it?"

  1. why do u believe taking that action is way of the old woman denying herself? good or bad is it up to us to decide what or who should get help or be save? I believe that everything and everyone once sting or is, but its only by excepting Chirst can one be untangle or unsting. I think everyone need a helping hand despite of who they are. What is that old woman Nature? maybe she never had a heart to help in the first place if she realizes that would be denying herself.overall everything and anything is possible to Christ.
now tell me whats the difference between a scorpion and you and I? be mindful that we all lie, envy and hurt each other,ex.....all of these things sting sometime we are even more tangle up with our selfish ways. everything and everyone can only be untangle by the love of God which should shine in us even by that old woman to untangle that scorpion.

oh by the way never knew you was a writer and like poetry. Great work!!!

  2. Thanks.
I don't believe that the woman helping the scorpion or taking that action is a way of her denying herself Because she couldn't do nothing but helping it (The scorpion). It hurt but she continue on helping the poor little creature. The reason why she does is because she knows that the scorpion can't help but sting her because its the nature of the scorpion to sting. Lets take God for example... we continue to sin each and everyday...But he continue to forgive us...
    Its LOVE
You know what ? you're totally right for all of all have faults in us...It takes determination and love... If all of us follow this old woman steps on helping others I'm pretty sure that we would have a better church, community, school, etc....with God, love and determination everything is possible.

  3. k help me understand. the woman in the last line clearly says" BECAUSE IT IS OF THE NATURE OF THE SCORPION TO STING, WHY SHOULD I DENY MY OWN NATURE TO SAVE IT? now i want to know what is her nature? and why she feels as if she would be denying it? I understand that she continues to help but really does she wants to hel? a lot of time we do things out of routine and expectation of something in return and when we dont get what we want, we return to our old self again.I want to understand. God help us out of grace and love now that old woman have not shown that. she show kindness but at the end shes like what am i doing? its useless. thats what I acquire from it.also my question towards her would be can she handle being sting? if so why is she complaining by saying what she said, she don't have to keep reminding the scorpion of its nature does she?

  4. No she don't have to keep reminding the scorpion of its nature.. but she didn't Au contraire she was defending the scorpion... by Saying "Because it is the nature of the scorpion to sting, why should I deny my own nature to save it" You have to understand that most of the time the will to help is great , but the will to give up is greater... I say that just to specifically explain that maybe she was doing it for herself or wanted to feel appreciated . Imagine when we human get hurt we Tend to not putting ourselves in the same situation in fear of not getting hurt again, but u see she put herself in the same position of getting hurt again....I admire her courage of not giving up even though she got hurt over and over again...

  5. to be honest with you, I think thats selfish, helping because she wanted to feel appreciated, i don't see how that relates to God. God doesnt save us because he want to feel appreciated by us, no he save us out of grace and mercy. in every situation in life we learn and grow so that we can handle things differently but that doesnt mean because someone hurt me im not going to help sopmeone else reason being im not helping because i want praise im helping because i know that i would want to be help. but once again everything depends on ones relationship with God. persomally i have experience great things in my life and because of my relationship with God it has taught me to appreciate every second of them because it was part of my molding, where i was being form. the only one that can fill that void of the old woman is God not the things of this world.

  6. Nadege listen I didn't say that the woman desire to feel appreciated is an example of God.. u got it all wrong,I know that God save us out of grace and mercy , Listen carefully I said that the woman not giving up is an example of GOD's love towards us. The old woman is a human being and a sinner just like u and I , She is not perfect, we are not pecfect , Only God is ,but we do have good qualities no? ok so lets focus on the positive side of the story and the fact that she tried her best to save the scorpion even though it was not the easiest thing to do.
